Walk fifty metres from the farmhouse and the WiFi is gone. It's one of the most common problems we're called out to across Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire: the house has a perfectly good connection, but the barn, the stables, the workshop or the garden office across the yard gets nothing. The tack room camera drops offline, the annexe guests complain, and working from the converted barn means tethering to a phone.
The good news is that this is one of the most solvable problems in rural networking — and you almost never need a second broadband subscription to fix it. Here's how it's done.
WiFi was never designed to cross open yards and pass through multiple buildings. The signal from your router has to get out of the house — often through thick stone or brick — travel the distance, then get into the outbuilding through another set of solid walls, and steel-framed or metal-clad agricultural buildings are effectively a Faraday cage. By the time anything arrives, it's too weak to be usable.
Plug-in extenders and "outdoor repeaters" pointed hopefully out of a window don't change the physics. What you need is a proper link between the buildings, and there are two honest ways to make one.
A wireless bridge is a pair of small, directional antennas — one mounted on the main house, one on the outbuilding — that beam your existing connection across the gap. Think of it as an invisible network cable through the air.

What makes bridges the go-to answer for most yards:
The requirement is line of sight: the two antennas need a reasonably clear view of each other. Trees in full leaf, a grain store in the way, or a dip in the land can all interfere — which is exactly what a site survey checks. There's more detail on our wireless bridges service page.
Sometimes the right answer is still a physical cable — either armoured Ethernet or a fibre run — buried in a duct between the buildings.
Trenching makes sense when:
The trade-off is obvious: digging costs money and makes a mess, and distances over 90 metres rule out a standard Ethernet cable, pushing you to fibre. Our honest rule of thumb: if the diggers are coming anyway, put a duct in; if not, a wireless bridge usually delivers the same result for less disruption.
Getting the connection across the yard is only half the job. Inside the barn or annexe, the bridge feeds a small network of its own — typically one or more access points so the WiFi is strong throughout, and wired points for anything that deserves a cable.
This is where the use cases get specific:
If the outbuilding can see the house, a wireless bridge is usually the quickest, cleanest and most cost-effective answer. If it can't — or the diggers are already booked — a trenched duct is the better long-term play. Every yard is different — distance, line of sight, building materials and what you actually need out there all change the design. That's why we always start by looking, not quoting.
How far can a wireless bridge reach? Across a courtyard is trivial; several hundred metres is routine; with the right kit and clear line of sight, links of several kilometres are possible. The limiting factor is almost always what's in the way, not the distance itself.
Does weather affect a wireless bridge? Properly installed point-to-point links are outdoor-rated and run happily through rain, wind and frost. Heavy foliage growing into the path over summer is the more common culprit, which is why alignment and mounting positions are chosen with the seasons in mind.
Can I run CCTV over a bridge? Yes — it's one of the most common reasons we install them. A good bridge carries multiple camera streams with ease, and the cameras in the outbuilding can record back to a recorder in the main house.
Do I need planning permission to mount antennas? The antennas are small — typically the size of a paperback — and are discreetly mounted. On listed buildings we work conservation-aware with removable fixings, and we'll flag anything that might need consent before we proceed.
