Your internet is probably fine. Your network isn't.

You pay for a fast line — fibre or Starlink — and it arrives at the house working perfectly. Then it has to travel the last ten metres to your laptop, your TV or the barn. That's where most rural WiFi quietly falls apart.

The line is rarely the problem. The kit spreading it around is.

Fibre to the property (FTTP) and Starlink both deliver a genuinely fast, reliable line to your home. Once it's there, the job is to carry that speed to every room, the garden and the outbuildings. The trouble is that most homes try to do that with the free router the internet company posted out, plus a couple of cheap plug-in extenders bought in a hurry.

That combination wastes a good line. A single router can only push so far, and every extender you daisy-chain tends to halve the speed again. In a modern house that's frustrating. In a stone cottage, a barn conversion or a farmhouse with thick walls, distance and outbuildings in the mix, it's hopeless — the signal simply doesn't make it to where you actually sit.

So you get the odd situation of paying for fast internet and still watching things buffer. The fix usually isn't a faster line. It's a network designed for your property, so the speed you already pay for reaches every corner of it.

No overclaiming here — a designed network can't make your line faster. What it does is stop the kit in your house wasting the speed you already pay for.

The part nobody talks about

Your cameras shouldn't be able to reach your laptop.

A cheap camera or smart plug is a small computer sitting on your network. On a flat home network — one router, everything lumped together — those devices can see everything else on it.

That matters because the cheapest smart devices are also the least secure. A budget camera or doorbell that never gets a software update is exactly the sort of thing that gets compromised. On a flat network, once something's in through that weak device, there's nothing stopping it reaching your laptop, your phone or the files you run the business on.

A designed network keeps them apart. We put cameras, smart plugs and other IoT devices on their own separate space — the technical name is a VLAN, but in plain terms it's a fenced-off part of the network. They get the internet they need to work, and nothing more. If one of them is ever compromised, it's stuck in its own pen and can't wander across to the things that actually matter.

Guests and holiday-let visitors get the same treatment: their own network, kept well away from your family's or your business's devices. It's the sort of thing that's standard in a well-run office and almost never done in a home — and on a rural property with cameras across the yard, it's exactly the sort of thing that should be.
