The best WiFi system for a stone house (UK)

Stone walls kill WiFi. Why repeaters disappoint, why wired access points win, and how to design room-by-room coverage in a UK stone house.

Ask anyone who lives in a stone cottage in a Northamptonshire village, a Cotswold-stone farmhouse on the Oxfordshire border, or a period townhouse in Buckingham: the walls that give the house its character are the same walls that stop WiFi dead. One room works, the next barely loads a page, and the room beyond that might as well be in a different postcode.

This guide explains why stone is so hostile to WiFi, why the popular quick fixes disappoint, and what the best system for a stone house actually looks like — including what to do when the building is listed.

Why stone walls kill WiFi

WiFi is radio, and radio hates dense material. A modern stud wall knocks a little off the signal as it passes through; a solid stone wall — often 400–600mm thick in older rural properties — absorbs and scatters it dramatically. The higher-speed 5GHz band suffers worst: it carries the most data but has the least ability to penetrate, so it's often gone after a single stone wall. The older 2.4GHz band travels a bit further but is slower and more congested.

Stone houses stack the deck further:

  • Internal walls are often solid too. In many period properties the internal walls are stone or solid brick, not plasterboard — so every room boundary is another cliff-edge for the signal.
  • Extensions create layers. Centuries of additions mean a signal may have to cross what used to be an external wall to reach the newer kitchen or annexe.
  • Chimney breasts, flagstone floors and oak beams all add dense mass in exactly the wrong places.
  • Deep window reveals and leaded glass scatter signal rather than letting it pass.

Repeaters and extenders: an honest warning

The first thing most people try is a plug-in repeater — and we'd rather tell you the truth before you spend the money: in a stone house, repeaters almost always disappoint.

A repeater has to receive the signal before it can repeat it. If it's plugged in where the signal is already weak — which is exactly where you need help — it rebroadcasts a weak, slow signal. And because it receives and retransmits on the same radio, it roughly halves your throughput and adds lag even when it works. Daisy-chain two of them and the connection at the end is a shadow of what you pay for.

Wireless mesh kits are a step up, but they inherit the same flaw in a stone house: the mesh units talk to each other through the walls. If stone blocks your router, it blocks the mesh hops too. Mesh works in the marketing photos because the demo house is plasterboard.

What actually works: wired access points

The system that genuinely solves a stone house is simple to describe: several access points, each covering one zone, connected by cables rather than by wishful thinking.

  • Each access point only has to cover its own room or zone, so nothing depends on a signal fighting through stone.
  • The cable (the "wired backhaul") carries the data between zones at full speed, immune to walls, weather and interference.
  • All the access points share one network name, so your phone and laptop roam seamlessly as you move through the house.

If a cable genuinely cannot reach a zone, a carefully placed wireless link can bridge a single gap — but that's a deliberate design decision made where the fabric demands it, not the default. More on the whole approach on our rural WiFi service page.

Designing coverage room by room

A good stone-house design starts with how you actually live, not with hardware:

  • Where do calls happen? The home office and the kitchen table usually top the list — they get priority zones.
  • Where does the family stream? Living room and bedrooms need solid coverage, not just "one bar".
  • What deserves a cable? A desktop, a TV, a games console or a CCTV recorder is happier wired — if we're running cables anyway, we add points where they'll be used.
  • What's beyond the house? Garden office, annexe, stables — the same network can extend across the yard with a point-to-point bridge.

A survey then maps the walls against that list. In a typical stone cottage, two or three access points transform the house; a larger farmhouse with an annexe may need more. Listed buildings: coverage without damage

Many of the stone houses we work on around Towcester, Brackley and the surrounding villages are listed or in conservation areas, and that changes how we install, not whether good WiFi is possible.

Working conservation-aware means: routing cables along mortar lines, floor voids and existing conduit rather than cutting into stone; using removable fixings and discreet mounts; hiding runs behind existing timber; and keeping any visible equipment small and sympathetic. Where consent might be relevant, we flag it before work starts so you can check with the conservation officer. The goal is a network you can't see in a building that looks untouched.

Frequently asked questions

How many access points does a stone house need? It depends on wall thickness and layout, not just floor area. Small cottages often need two; a farmhouse with thick internal walls and an annexe may need four or more. A site survey gives you the exact number rather than a guess.

Is powerline (Ethernet-over-mains) a good alternative to cabling? Occasionally useful as a last resort, but older properties often have aged or fragmented wiring across multiple circuits, which makes powerline slow and unpredictable. A proper cable is dramatically more reliable; we treat powerline as a stopgap, not a solution.

Will one high-end "gaming" router solve it? No. Transmit power is legally capped in the UK, so an expensive router can't legally shout through stone any louder than a cheap one. The gains are in placement and zones, not wattage.

Can this be done without redecorating? Almost always. Cable routes go through lofts, voids and existing routes, and the access points are neat, low-profile units. Most installs leave no visible trace beyond the equipment itself.
